Material Recovery

A materials recovery facility (MRF) is vital in residential and commercial single-stream recycling programs.

The material recovery facility sorts and separates waste materials for the purpose of recycling and it works best in a “Single stream” collection system. However, developing countries find it challenging to perform segregation at the source, therefore MRF is used to segregate three main waste types:

  • Municipal organic waste used in composite.
  • Recyclable materials that are sold to traders and recycling facilities.
  • Undifferentiated waste that is used in energy recovery or landfilled.
